As the name suggests, Edgewater is a small stretch of coastline on mainland Miami, covering approximately 1.68 square miles. It’s sandwiched between Midtown and the Upper East Side to the north and Downtown Miami to the south. North 17th Street, North 37th Street, and the Florida East Coast Railroad form the inner boundary. Its official eastern boundary lies a few miles outside the Inland Waterway, as the area also has jurisdiction over Perth Picnic Island, about 3/4 mile offshore.

While there is no boardwalk, Edgewater’s beaches and city centre hotspots are within easy reach, making it an irresistible place to live. Overpriced apartments are on the waterfront (one has an $8.6 million penthouse), and inland accommodation is cheaper. High-rise apartments have fueled a wave of gentrification, a term that implies all the contradictions, but there are more down-to-earth places to spend an evening or a lazy Sunday.

With the neighbourhood’s wine cellars, cafes and thrift stores in stark contrast to the tall buildings beyond, Edgewater feels like a place of transformation. However, it offers variety, a high standard of living and the highlights of being very close to the beach and city centre.

Head downtown to find all your high street brands, then cross I-195 and visit Miami’s Design District, a hub for cultural enterprise including more than 130 art galleries, showrooms, fashion boutiques, architectural offices, antique dealers , restaurant and bar.

A feast for the eyes (and stomach), it’s easily accessible from Edgewater a short walk or north along NE 2nd Avenue. Drive down the interstate and you’ll soon find yourself in this chic little neighborhood. Art lovers can visit the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) and the luxury museum garage opposite.
