Miami Open History

This major Miami Event was created by the American former tennis player Butch Buchholz in partnership with ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) and a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) in the 80s.

Beginning in February 1985 in the city of Delray Beach, Florida, in Laver’s International Tennis Resort, the tournament was attended by some renowned tennis players of the time and with the referee Alan Mills, the famous competition in Wimbledon, England. In 1986, the tournament moved to the nearby city of Boca Raton and the following year to Key Biscayne in Miami-Dade County, Florida, where he is currently held.

In its first edition the prize was $ 1.8 million, smaller only than the Wimbledon and US Open tournament. After that, the prize was increased to exceed $ 6 million.
